subject: How the Internet Changed Us As People [print this page]

The Internet changed us so much as people, that we now simply cannot imagine life without it. It's often talked about how people feel "lost" without their mobile phone, if they happen to forget it one day. This goes back to our insatiable need for communication, and staying in touch with what's happening in the world around us.

The same can be said for the Internet - imagine going a week without logging on to your laptop many people find this hard to do even for one day! Whether it be for work or personal use, the internet has become a second home, somewhere to stay in touch with friends, catch up with news, learn and be educated, be entertained and on and on It gives a sense of connection and community to its users.

It is fair to say that the Internet changed the way we are, as a species. In essence it has transformed the way we consume. Intellectually, people now have broader points of view, and are much more informed than possibly in the past. Socially, we feel part of another community a global one that's online. People have a strong voice online and are vocal in putting forth their opinions.

The popularity of the Internet has changed how we even go about our daily lives. Commonplace things we used to do all the time can now all be done online. For example, reading a newspaper, watching TV and movies. People don't use phone books or cook books anymore, and the act of handwriting letters is all but extinct.

Trips to the bank have been pretty much wiped out, as we can manage our financial affairs online, and can pay bills online. Additionally investing is carried out using the web, along with filing taxes. The Internet has in a sense handed us back our independence, and has bestowed upon us more control over managing our own lives.

The introduction of the internet changed our shopping habits drastically everything from a house, to a takeaway can be bought online. as we happily fill up our virtual shopping baskets! No more trudging through the crowded malls and fighting for car park spaces. Online shopping gives you the entire world at your finger tips and takes all the stress away. It also facilitates easier shopping around for deals, which was a chore in the past.

The internet changed the concept of communication forever. Thanks to social media, people stay very much in touch due to the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and internet access on their smart phones.

It is becoming much more widespread to meet people and build relationships over the web, many of which nowadays end in marriage. People are also reconnecting with people from their past, which most likely would not have been the case previously, something only possible due to the widespread penetration of the internet.

This voracious need for information is set only to heighten for the foreseeable future, as technology develops even further, thereby rendering life as we know it today redundant.

It is simply unimaginable just how people will conduct their day-to-day lives in 100 years from now.
