subject: Basic Facts That Everyone Considering Liposuction Needs To Know [print this page]

More and more people are turning to cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance and smooth out their figures. In today's society, most people have a little bit of fat they'd like to lose. However, an increasing number of people regard themselves as too busy to exercise regularly or cook healthy meals. This, along with an increasing societal acceptance of cosmetic surgery, means that more and more people are turning to doctors and surgeons to help them to drop the pounds.

Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is among the foremost ways to surgically remove fat. In the procedure, small incisions are made around a specific target area. Once these incisions are made, a small hollow needle called a cannula is inserted into the area. This cannula is hooked up to some sort of vacuum device, and as it is moved through the fatty tissue, it disrupts and then suctions out the excess and unwanted fat.

The surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis. It usually takes somewhere between one and several hours to perform, and it is usually performed under local anesthesia.

Lipoplasty costs vary based on a number of factors including geographical region, the areas to be targeted during the surgery, the experience of the surgeon and his or her staff, and the gender of the patient. Most of these surgeries cost something more than $1000 and something less than $10,000.

Lipoplasty typically works best on people who are relatively close to their ideal weight. People who are severely overweight or obese may be advised to lose weight before they can undergo the surgery. A liposuction is best suited to removing limited amounts of weight from specific areas of the body, not a removing large amounts of fat in a full-body procedure.

After the surgery, a person can typically return to a desk job within a couple days. Physically demanding jobs and serious exercise should probably be postponed slightly longer than that, and patients should ease themselves back into physical exertion.

Some amount of swelling, draining and bruising is fairly common after the surgery. The draining usually stops after several days. Bruising should go down relatively quickly as well. The swelling will begin to go down relatively quickly after the surgery, but it often does not fully disappear until several weeks or months after the surgery.

If you would like to know more about lipoplasty, please consider meeting with a surgeon in your area for a free consultation.
