Breast Augmentation: Some Common Questions Answered

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular surgeries performed on women. Because of lost fullness due to childbirth, lactation, and genetics or simply due to flattened tissue which often results from aging, many women are interested in increasing the size of their boobs. Here are some answers to the more common questions that are often asked.

What does a boob augmentation entail? This procedure is performed by a cosmetic surgeon in order to increase the size of a woman's breast. An incision is made to insert an implant in order to add additional fullness.

Where are the incisions made? The incisions may be placed under the nipple/areola, beneath the fold of skin under the breast crease, in the armpit area or via the navel.

What are the implants made of? Implants may be filled with either a silicone or saline solution. Silicone implants may be used after a woman is 22 years of age, while saline implants may be used by women who are 18 years of age. This is a stipulation made by the FDA, which is the Food and Drug Administration, an agency which monitors the safety of food, drugs and medical devices. The saline is a more natural substance, but the silicone is said to offer a more natural result.

What are the different sizes, shapes and textures of implants? They come in a variety of sizes in order to offer whatever bra cup size a woman chooses. They come in round or tear drop shape in order to align with a woman's natural curvature. Round ones usually come with a smooth surface while tear drops often have a texture to ensure that they don't slip around in the body.

How long does this surgical procedure take? It takes from one to three hours to perform. The patient is usually able to go home that same day. All swelling and bruising should subside within six weeks. There may be some initial pain and tenderness, but both should be easily managed with pain medication.

Is a woman able to breast feed after boob augmentation? Unfortunately, many women are unable to nurse a baby after this procedure. It may be wise to wait until after childbearing and lactation to undergo this operation.

Who should perform a breast augmentation procedure? Only a reputable cosmetic surgeon should perform this operation, as they have the proper skills and training to ensure an optimum outcome.
