subject: Time To Get New Kitchen Cabinets [print this page]

If you want to dramatically change the appearance of your kitchen and the functionality, new kitchen cabinets are the way to go. Replacing the cabinets is the biggest part of any kitchen remodeling job and they can not only change the look of your kitchen but will make working in the kitchen so much more enjoyable. By pulling out the old cabinets you can change the entire layout of the room, give yourself more work space as well as a great deal of additional storage.

The cabinets that are sold today have been designed with the cook in mind. There are a number of options available now that no one thought of when your current cabinets were constructed 20 or 30 years ago. When older homes were built, there was not the emphasis on kitchen design that there is today. The kitchen was often crammed into the back of the house with the emphasis put on the living space, now the kitchen is the living space and the place where many families spend most of their time.

When you draw up the design for your new kitchen think about how your kitchen is used. What happens in this room beyond cooking? If this is where the kids are doing homework or you pay the bills, install a desk. A breakfast counter is perfect for the quick bite to eat before school or work. If you do not have a pantry to store canned goods and other food items, add one. Large cabinets that are three feet wide and up to six feet tall work very well for this purpose and most come with the option of getting slide out trays so that even the item on the very back of the shelf is easily accessible.

If you a great deal of entertaining or do not have enough space along side the sink for preparing meals, add a center island. A four foot base cabinet can easily be turned into an island. All you have to do is place two cabinets back to back, anchor them to the floor and secure a counter top. The extra storage space that the cabinets add under the island is great for storing away pots and pans as well as serving trays. People who entertain a great deal will also want to look at custom options that come with the cabinets like drawer organizers, slide out cutting boards and wine racks.
