subject: Plastic Surgeons Search - How To Find A Great One [print this page]

There is no limit to the number of reasons people choose to find plastic surgeons. Cosmetic surgery has become America's new national pastime. Today, when people look in the mirror and see something they don't like, they have options. They can exercise to get rid of unwanted fat or tone up their muscles. They can cut and color their hair. And they can get a cosmetic operation to take care of nearly everything else. It should go without saying, but finding a good doctor should be your primary concern if you're thinking of going under the knife. Here are some tips to help you do just that.

Getting a referral is the best way to find good plastic surgeons. You ask your friends and family members for advice when it comes to department store sales and the best place to eat out on a Friday night, so why wouldn't you do the same when it comes to something this important? Searching for a place to have your cosmetic surgery is not something that should be done in a vacuum. If you don't have any acquaintances that can help you, try getting a referral from another doctor. If you have a general physician that you often use, they may be able to help you out in this respect.

Even if you've got some good referrals in hand, that's only the beginning of your research. You need to find out if your plastic surgeon has the credentials you want to see. Your doctor will have your appearance and safety in his hands. You want to go to every length to make sure they are competent and qualified hands. Make sure they are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. With as much competition as there is nowadays in the field, there's no reason why you should have to settle for anything less.

Your next step should be to contact your state's medical board and see if there has been any malpractice judgments or disciplinary action taken against any of the plastic surgeons you're thinking of hiring for the job. Keep in mind that malpractice suits in and of themselves are not necessarily warning flags. Suing doctors has become somewhat commonplace and few doctors get through their careers without at least a few cases. This is even more true in the case of cosmetic surgery. Disciplinary action from the medical board is another thing entirely. If you see this, think about going elsewhere.
