Ross-anne: In a digital world, why does direct mail make sense?

Jon: Email is everywhere. Email is the communication of the day, right? So why go through the hassle and expense of creating paper mail?

The answer is simple: People absolutely do not read emails unless theyre critical to their lives or theyre fun to read. Junk email is the easiest thing in the world to dismiss.

With that in mind do you suppose that dental information sent to your patients via email is interesting?

Now, this might offend some dentists but its not. Its not interesting to 99.9 percent of the population. They dont have time or desire to think about their dental care unless theyre in pain. And in that case theyre going to come to you regardless if you sent mail, email or not.

Paper mail makes sense because it lives, it exists, it lives on the kitchen counter, it exists in the bedroom. Its something that they can look at and touch and feel. And its beautiful. A way beyond newsletter is beautiful, its like a work of art that you can really sink your teeth into and its fun to read.

So when the computer is off and the lights are dim and theyre looking through their magazines looking for something to read theyll pick up the newsletter and theyll read it. And theyll enjoy reading it.

Thats just one of the reasons that mail beats email ten times over.
