subject: Prostate Enlargement Surgery: Understanding Turp [print this page]

Prostate enlargement surgery may be the most effective of all enlarged prostate treatments as it brings more permanent results than any other alternative or natural therapies. This method is efficient in relieving a person of the symptoms of prostate enlargement, particularly those that affect their urinary function. This way, they wont have to deal with these symptoms that may keep coming back from the use of alternative treatments.

A common example among prostate enlargement surgeries is Transurethral Resection of the Prostate, or TURP. Many experts have been comparing this method to newer treatments due to its efficiency in treating certain enlarged prostate symptoms.

This surgery is generally done by inserting a tiny tube-like camera called an endoscope to the tip of the male sex organ. It is then directed to the urethra up to the bladder and goes to the excess tissues in the prostate that are to be scraped off.

This operation is not limited to cutting off excess prostate tissues. It may also help the urologist identify the presence of tumors or stones, if any. If none has been found, the electrical loop will be positioned to the region where the excess prostate tissue pushes the urethra. This loop then takes the tissue out.

After the prostate enlargement surgery, the excess tissue will be examined in the lab to determine if there are prostate cancer cells present. The patient will be on a catheter for urination until after the healing process. The patient will have to wait for a day or two before the catheter is removed.

When the catheter is removed, the patients may observe blood upon urinating, which is normal as scab material is flushed out. To completely flush out the blood deposits left by the wound from the operation, the patient will need to consume enough amounts of water. This also helps in preventing blood clots that may lead to blockages within the urinary tract.

TURP is a minimally invasive operation, which means that undesirable results are less likely to happen. Certain urinary problems may occur within the first few months after the operation. However, these are temporary, and are rarely complained by the patients as the results greatly cover these complications.

Erectile dysfunction turns out to be a side effect of this method. However, it occurs in less than 1 percent of the patients. Based on the records of the American Urological Association, the symptoms were improved by almost 90 percent of the patients, therefore, making it an effective prostate enlargement surgery.
