subject: Landscaping: The Differences Across America [print this page]

Have you ever stopped to think about the different landscaping in yards and commercial properties in the different states as you have traveled around? Recently I had the opportunity to travel from Utah to California and as we drove through the different states we found ourselves commenting on the different landscaping. When we drove through Utah it was amazing to see the different landscapes from the snow and dry lawn to getting to St. George where the sun had been shining and it looked beautiful. Where the snow was there wasn't anyone outside enjoying the landscape, but then you come to St. George and the grass was green and people were outside enjoying the red rock and the golf courses.

Then you travel through Nevada where everything seems to be dry year round. We commented that it is some of the most boring scenery. It is sagebrush and wind. Everything looks very dry. As you come to some of the cities you can see some of the greenery, but mostly the landscaping in Nevada is rocks and dry bushes. When you see the landscape around the casinos and some of the housing area you find that the landscaping is very beautiful.

Then as we came into California and got closer to the beach it was amazing how green and beautiful it was. All of the yards had landscape of flowers and everything that could possibly be green. It looked full of life and felt very refreshing. There were a couple of places throughout California that had a little bit of snow, but pretty much it was green.

I used to live in Arizona and when I first moved there I had a hard time getting used to the landscape. It was all rocks, cactus and dryer plants. I was missing the green, but the longer I lived there I came to really love the landscape of Arizona. It was beautiful. It was unique and the people who lived there loved it.

Whether you live in Seattle or Chicago or Georgia or Oregon you will find that the landscape is different, but unique. Whether it is dry or rocks or green or very little landscape people find that they truly can love the landscape they have around them. That is what makes traveling so much fun. You can discover so many new ideas for your own yard and you can really do some of them. Some of them you can't, but you can share in the enjoyment of the places that you travel.
