subject: Steps Towards Healing Broken Ties With Family [print this page]

Everyone wants to have an affectionate and significant relationship among their family members. We believe to attain such this the family should have a good skills in dealing with people, particularly understanding the other persons situation and feelings, and being able to control one's natural negative reaction to certain situations.

Every time you deal with your relatives, you are tapping on the skills. You should also learn to be understanding and to invest more time with relatives. This way you are positively working on your relationship.

Psychologically it may help if you would think of a kind act as a savings that you put in an account. Positive encounter that brings your relationship closer together in harmony means a deposit, while negative encounters are withdrawal from the account.

The more good memories you make with family, the better your relationships with them becomes. It might take a while, but before you know it, time will pass and you won't even remember that you are 'investing' in good relations. Being kind and considerate to one another will happen naturally.

For those who would want to strengthen their ties, here are some suggestions that would teach you to accept your relatives, open your eyes to their value in your life, make you more aware of their condition and finally, lead you to a better relationship amongst yourself.

Learn to sense what the other person is feeling in his or her situation. This would give you a better idea of why they are reacting to you in certain ways.

Learn also to avoid responding immediately if you can. Learn to take more time in getting more information about the situation. This would give you more information and time to plan out the best respond to a situation. People will respect you more this way.

Finally, listen and feel. Empathize with your family members and if you can, learn to see from their perspective. Put yourself in their shoes so you can gain an understanding of them. Though there are some family situations that might seem hopeless, there are also many worth saving. And for this, try to get a grip on your emotions and responses so you can forge together to the future constructively. After all, family means everything.
