subject: Essential Hot Spots For Your Next Vacation [print this page] When I was growing up, my parents seemed to think that the only place to vacation was southern California. I guess that's because California theme parks offered a wide variety of fun attractions to appeal to every member of the family.
But once I actually moved to Orange County--home to famous beaches, Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and more--I realized I had hardly had a glimpse of the entertainment and adventure southern California has to offer. So if you're considering a vacation to my neck of the woods, then you'll want a heads up on the landmarks, sights, and attractions you just can't miss.
If you're hoping to hit the beach, then you might be inclined to think any one of them will do, but that's not true. The waves, the atmosphere, and even the wildlife are a little different from beach to beach. Huntington in Orange County is a popular beach for tourists and has a shopping district just a little up the shore. It is a favorite spot of coast for surfers, while Laguna Beach is prized for the nearby boutiques and frequent dolphin sightings.
Seal Beach and Long Beach tend to be less crowded, but not everyone will brave those waters because of the plentiful stingrays found in the area. Newport Beach is home to dozens of upscale restaurants, and it is one of the best stretches of coast to go deep-sea fishing and whale-watching.
These are just a handful of beaches you can visit. There are plenty more choices to consider among San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles counties. But I don't want to talk about beaches exclusively.
You cannot, of course, miss Hollywood! The Walk of Fame, the theatres, and the restaurants should all have at least one day of your attention. In fact, whenever I go for a return visit, I prefer to search for the best rates at Los Angeles hotels in Hollywood.
If you're traveling with kids, then you don't want to miss the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Heck, you should still check it out, even if you're with friends or just your spouse. Similarly, you should take a peek at Griffith Observatory, a public astronomy venue that features "star parties," and beautiful grounds and facilities, all available free of charge.
If you are the outdoors-y type, all three of the famous southern counties I've mentioned feature public parks with almost limitless hiking trails. Most of them require a small entrance fee, but it is usually under five dollars.
There's no way I could begin to make an exhaustive list of activities and sites, but hopefully this will at least give you a place to start!
