At the top of the list, the most important part of painting is having the right materials. The basic items include, paint, brushes, thinners, canvas and primers. How can you know if it's good quality?

There is a big learning curve with anything, and the same can be said about your materials. Basically you will have to get a feel for each one and figure out which materials you are most comfortable working with.

When you pick a canvas, start with a size that feels right, try not to go too big. The comes the quality, which when you first start painting, don't spend too much time focusing on it. Try not to go very cheap on canvas, because you might love your first paintings. Before you paint anything, you have to paint the canvas.

If you paint with a crappy brush, you might as well not paint at all. Hog's hair brushes work the best with oil painting. The best way to find the best brush is to just try them out.

You will also need a thinner/solvent to clean your brushes in between colors. And then we have the paints. When you are buying your first set of paint, don't cheese out, get quality paint. Start with the primary colors, red, yellow and blue, and then add to your collection as you go on.

A huge part of painting is learning the methods, and if you are like 90% of people in the world, you can't afford a tutor or have the time/money to take courses at your local college or trade school. So what are your cheaper and more convenient options?

A program called Learn and Master Painting by Gayle Levee is designed specifically for at home painters to learn. Imagine being able to learn at your own pace in your own house? Can you pause, rewind and fast forward your tutor!
