subject: Negotiate Your Way To The Top [print this page]

When trying to negotiate with someone, it is important to go about it the right way. You have to approach a negotiation with certain skills and tactics. You need to be well aware of your side of the argument and have facts to back up what you feel is right. There are certain steps you can take, when going into a negotiation. Lots of negotiations get off to the wrong start because the parties involved have not taken the time to clearly point out the areas where they disagree. To increase your negotiation skills, define where everyone may agree and disagree, discover likely areas of agreement to set a more balanced tone and define the reason of the argument.

Another skill to have when being part of a negotiation is to have empathy. Having empathy means that you have an understanding on what someone else feels of thinks. You can agree or disagree with whatever the other person presents to you but it is very beneficial to you to understand it. By understanding it, you will have a greater advantage in knowing how to present your side of the argument. Rather than being scared or not being able to accept the outcome, you will have a fair discussion instead.

It is also important to be honest and get your facts right. It is impossible to negotiate in a successful way when you lack credibility. You should never assume anything or make a false statement it all comes down to having more accurate information than the other person. This means doing your homework read up on as much as you can so that you can speak about every issue with confidence and ease. Also, despite what many people may think, loudness will get you nowhere. Raising your voice and screaming will, without a doubt, always work to your disadvantage. It is only natural for people to want to fill up the spaces of silence with words but this only leads to saying things that you don't mean and that don't match up with your argument.

Lastly, it is important to find a common ground that all parties can agree upon. By setting this standard you, frame the issues, take greater control of the process, frame out the standard to your advantage and set the stage to win your argument. Taking these steps will not make you an expert, however, it will help you have better communication skills and improve your negotiating. Getting your point across to other people in a calm and professional way is the only route to take.
