subject: Student Life: Student Enclave. Is Society Against It? [print this page] Enclave is a portion of territory surrounded by a larger territory which inhabitants are culturally or ethnically distinct. Student enclave has the similar definition with the general one. It is a particular territory where inhabitants are the ordinary students. The thing is that in opposite to the human attitude to college towns, the attitude of people towards student enclaves is different.
Student Enclave: the True Picture
As a rule, student enclaves often lead to offence between students and local residents. It happens because houses and sometimes the whole neighborhoods where students rent apartments for living during the studying process left empty during the summer months when all the students go on vacation. Some inhabitants also indicate that students disturb the way of life of the whole area by slighting the society where they live.
The Plan to Resolve the Problem
As the situation with student enclave became so harsh, ministers decided to act against student enclaves. They edited by new laws students should follow. New orders make the process of neighborhood colonization by students in university towns much harder. There are laws that allow to take all the property under total council control. According to this system the distribution of the property among students would be more subordinated to law and this would let systematize the data and diminish the level of offence in specific areas.
However, there are officials that do not agree with the new program of actions. They explained their position as the following: students as any mature people should be free in their choice. This opinion is also related to the possibility to live close to each other in community.
Another problem existing here is the conditions of student accommodation. The officials insist that standards of student lodging should be improved. In this case the problem of relationships between students and local residents would disappear itself.
