subject: Commenting On Blogs For Backlinks [print this page] Posting comments on blogs is still a very important part of any backlinking strategy. It is true that this has been abused by many, and some people will tell you this has made posting to blogs useless. Not true at all.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Make your comment pertinent to the post. - If your comment is general in nature, the blogger will assume it was posted via automation and delete it. Be a contributing part of the bloggers community. This will get you click throughs from the blog as well as the SEO juice from the backlink.
2. Put no backlinks within the comment itself. - Most times this is enough to get your comment deleted even if it is pertinent. Bloggers are not blogging so you have a place to put backlinks. You may occasionally get one through, but to me is just isn't worth the risk,
3. Use your keyword or keyword phrase in the Name field. - This is what will anchor the URL you put in the Website field. This is the backlink where you will get your SEO juice. Don't worry about whether the blog is NoFollow or DoFollow (see below for a discussion on this) just post your comment and move on. You will benefit.
Finding appropriate blogs to comment on isn't really all that hard either. You may want to use software like Comment Kahuna or some other software title, but frankly I find it just as easy to search Google using Ryan Diess' "Authority Codes" to get high pagerank blogs of a wide variety of types for comment posting.
There are 12 of these codes to use for your searches:
site:.com inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.org inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.gov inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.com "powered by expressionengine" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.org "powered by expressionengine" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.edu "powered by expressionengine" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.gov "powered by expressionengine" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.com "Powered by BlogEngine.NET"site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.org "Powered by BlogEngine.NET"site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.edu "Powered by BlogEngine.NET"site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.gov "Powered by BlogEngine.NET"site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
The top four codes are designed to locate Wordpress blogs that allow for commenting. The middle group is designed to find Expression Engine blogs, and the bottom group is designed to find BlogEngine blogs
Expression Engine and BlogEngine are both popular among academics and some government agencies for some reason, which is why we like to focus on those in additional to Wordpress.
Since Wordpress is the most common blogging platform, however, we're usually able to get our 10 links without going beyond the first 4 "Authority Codes".
You can further enhance the effectiveness of this process by installing the Firefox plugin SEO Quake. This will show information on the sites in the SERPs like the pagerank and Alexa rank of each one listed.
Some people will tell you to comment on any blog that will have you. I don't agree, which is why you should add your keyword (in quotes) into each "Authority Code" search string.
This ensures that the blogs you comment on will be at least somewhat related to your site. This increases the chance that the link will stick around for a long time, PLUS (and more importantly) it makes you a valuable member of the community instead of just another spammer.
I taught this method to a class I used to run and some of the students came back and complained that they got zero results back when they searched for their keywords. If this happens it usually means your search was too narrowly specific. You don't need to search for the exact match of the keyword you are optimizing for. Just the main keyword for your niche.
Example: If you are optimizing for the term "Chihuahua Breeders in Kankakee" you should search for just "Chihuahua Breeders" or even just "Chihuahuas". To take the example to the extreme, I would next try "Dog Breeders" and then "Dogs" if I still came up empty.
