subject: How To Convert Your PowerPoint To A DVD Slide Show [print this page]

When people experience something very meaningful or memorable, they often want to preserve it in pictures so that they can look back at these images and reminisce. It used to be a common practice to have photographs developed (it was the only way, really, before the digital camera came into commercial use) and then arrange them inside photo albums, which would then be placed in the reception room for sharing with guests.

But now, with the dominance of the digital camera, developing pictures and putting them in albums has mostly given way to online photo albums on networking and other kinds of sites. Or, for those who would rather share an electronic album in person without the hassle of connecting to the Internet, DVD slideshows are an increasingly popular alternative.

Why convert a PowerPoint presentation into a DVD slideshow?

PowerPoint presentations work by presenting audio, visual and textual information in response to commands given to the program through a computer. This comes in handy for a great number of things, but when sharing photos with family and friends, many prefer to have a smooth and automatically running slideshow that doesn't require constant attention from its viewers. If you find yourself similarly inclined, then you should know how to use computer programs to convert a PowerPoint presentation to a DVD slideshow.

Steps to proper conversion

One might think that simply writing a PowerPoint presentation onto a DVD would do the job. But if you have ever actually tried this, you'll know that it isn't that simple. You will need a program (or a number of programs) that do the conversion process properly and ensure optimal quality for your DVD slideshow.

Step 1: The resolutions of your computer screen and of a normal DVD video are different, so you should try to make your screen resolution as close as possible to DVD dimensions (usually 720x480). Since your screen does not have this exact setting, choose the closest setting, 800x600 pixels. Technically, you could also choose 640x480 pixels, but this won't look as good when scaled up as 800x600 pixels will when scaled down.

Step 2: You first have to preserve the movements and transitions of your PowerPoint, so use any software that can properly capture your ppt. or pptx. and convert it into a video file.

Step 3:Use a video editing program to cut out parts, place transitions between segments, insert captions and add sound such as background music. If you are new to the world of slideshow making, it will be a good idea to view others' works to get a couple of ideas of what kinds of things good video editing software will allow you to do.

Step 4: Create menu for your DVD. Although the easiest thing to do would be to just have a single segment in your menu, if your presentation is long and can naturally be divided into several parts (say, the various destinations of a vacation trip) then you may want to think about cutting it up into shorter segments and making the menu accordingly.

Step 5: Burn your DVD, and enjoy sharing your photos!

Finding the right program/s to help you do all this is important to ensure good slideshow quality, so try to explore your options and find the best ones for you.
