subject: What Makes Dogs Cry At Night [print this page]

Dogs make wonderful pets because these are happy animals. The seemingly grinning face and the enthusiastically wagging tail are trademarks of man's best friends. Pet owners can confirm that when it comes to affection and happiness, dogs are unrivaled. Dogs are real furry bundles of fun until they show some annoying behaviors.

Dogs are considered as pseudo people not only because they are well loved pets but also because these animals do have some "people-like" qualities. Puppies are well loved because these irresistible bundles of fur would entertain the family the whole day - but this situation can change when nighttime comes. Once you turn off the lights, similar to babies, these pets would start to whimper and cry. Puppies can be cry babies that would disturb the master's sleep but older dogs are known to whine and cry too. What makes your pet dog cry at night?

If you have taken home a puppy from the breeder, expect to have a sleepless night. Excited about the new pet, the family members will take turns to play with the new puppy. The puppy though will be left alone when the family retires to sleep. Without the family's attention, the puppy will start to miss the mother and the litter mates. The dark unfamiliar place will also be frightening thus the puppy would cry to get the attention of the new family.

Mature dogs also cry at night. The reason for crying though would be different from what makes puppies cry at night. Dogs are social creatures thus they would crave for the attention of the family. In spite of being energetic animals, dogs love to sleep too and if given a chance, the pet will sleep the day away.

Dogs that are left alone at home all day would either develop a destructive behavior or would remain the ideal pet and sleep the day away. Your pet that has been sleeping the whole day would be very much "alive" at night and would expect to play and bond with the family. The dog will not understand that nighttime is "recharging" time for humans. The dog will cry to get the attention of its human friends. Crying at night can be the dog's way of calling your attention because it wants to go potty. The crying dog may have an undiagnosed health concern. Although going to the dog every time it cries is not recommended as it will reinforce this unwanted habit, an owner must also verify if the crying dog is sick.
