subject: Do You Qualify For Lasik Eye Surgery? [print this page]

For sure by now you are at least somewhat familiar with LASIK eye surgery. It's only understandable because it is in fact now one of the most talked about vision correction procedures available today. By the way, are you aware of what the letters LASIK stand for? Well it's a bit of a mouthful but they stand for (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis).

This is what's referred to in medical terminology as a refractive laser eye operation and it's commonly performed as a corrective measure for issues related to general shortsightedness. At the same time, its also imperative that patients considering this operation be aware that along with potential advantages, it does carry some possible risks.

So because there is a certain element of risk measures are taken to limit by screening patients to identify those who would be most at risk. So then just what are some of the criteria that is used in this screening process? To start off with you must be over the age of eighteen before you can have LASIK eye surgery performed on you.

In fact many doctors don't like to consider patients until they have reached the age of 25. That alone surprises a lot of people, but the fact is that the bone structure of the skull is not considered fully developed until that age, and this can effect the shape of the eye.

The next item to consider, is that your vision condition has to be stabilized, and it must have been so for a full year. The problem here that's so frustrating for far too many patients, is that in order to achieve full effects, your vision problems must have stopped progressing, or the results from LASIK may not be permanent.

Your eye or eyes must also be healthy in order to undergo the procedure, and even if it, or they appear perfectly healthy at the time, chronic or occasional accuring infections may leave you disqualified. Also a recent injury in or around the eye will also most likely count you out.

Pregnant and nursing mothers are also routinely prevented from having LASIK eye surgery performed. It's not the surgery itself that's the source of risk issue in this case. Instead it's the use of drugs in the post operative, or healing stage that causes the risk to the unborn or nursing child.
