subject: Which Magic The Gathering Cards Should You Sell - 5 Simple Selling Strategies For Magic The Gatherin [print this page]

If you are wanting to sell some of your Magic the Gathering cards, one vital question is bound to have crossed your mind:

What do you want to sell and what do you want to keep?

This question is an important one, and will have a different answer for each and every player, but it is important to remember that every Magic the Gathering player is also a collector at heart. You've probably got a rough idea of what your cards may be worth, but even if you haven't, here are a few strategies which can help you think about which cards you wish to sell. If you don't know the value of your cards, it may be worthwhile spending a bit of time trying to figure out how much your collection is worth, and particular if there are any individually valuable cards in your collection. This step is not mandatory, but this valuation step may help you in your quest to figure out what you want to sell from your MTG card collection.

The choice of which cards to keep and which cards to sell is completely yours to make, but there are certain strategies that I would recommend you consider. Only the first of these requires that you have a good idea of which cards are valuable in your collection at the outset.

Here are the 5 strategies:

1. Sell the Expensive Stuff - only sell the most valuable cards in your collection. This will most likely be Rares, Mythic Rares and any other promotional cards you may have acquired. You could also refine this list of cards by only the most valuable MTG cards from that list.

2. Sell the Excess - sell any cards that you have more than 4 copies of (except possible Relentless Rats of course!).

3. Sell the Older Stuff - most people play with either the latest MTG cards, or cards from the last few MTG sets. Figure what sets you usually play with (this could be Standard, Extended or another format), and then sell the rest as they are just superfluous.

4. Sell Everything Outside of Standard Constructed - Standard id the most played constructed format of the game. Keeping all your cards from these sets will still allow you to play this format, and you can sell all your other MTG cards.

5. Sell Everything - this is obviously the best strategy if you want to sell all of your collection, if you want to give up playing Magic the Gathering, or if you simply want to focus on the Limited formats of the game (where you get new cards for every game). This strategy will obviously get you the most money from your collection, but also dependant on how you sell your collection, this can also take some time. One additional advantage of using this strategy, on top of the money of course, is that you no longer have a large collection of cards to maintain.

These are 5 basic strategies for helping you to think about which Magic the Gathering cards you could keep, and which you could sell. Hopefully this will have at least given you a brief overview to get you started, so why not get started today?
