Capturing the essence of the animals is what she wants to achieve in her paintings. If I know the animal's personality, I can recreate it with colors. The first painting she made was medium sized dog she and her husband saw during a camping trip. It was a red dog, and it never left them.
Her jealous dog's portrait was painted with green. This artist may be using nonconventional colors, but she's not the first one. Inspired by his dog who had already passed away, a cajun artist painted a dog using the color blue.
In her paintings, the blue dog is pretty noticeable. While people may find a certain playfulness in the blue dog paintings, there is actually a serious and darker side in how the artist views the paintings. There is a spiritual meaning in each of the paintings if you look deeper than its comical exterior. She desires that the very essence of the animal's life be found in the art. Using vibrant colors and unusual patterns, she tries to capture the way they act. All her animals are rescued, adopted from a shelter or found on the street. She finally adopted another dog who kept leaving a neighbor's house and going to another's.
She left fliers in local veterinarian offices last summer to market her pet portraits. She requests from her clients photos of the animal and also a description of the animal's personality. She said her selection of colors would be based on how she understands the animal. The store owner explained that the portraits give customers more than what a normal portrait would give them.
The painting of her was a bright yellow, revealing her energetic side. A person who owns an art gallery said portraits have more appeal if people know who the subjects are. Appreciation for a portrait does not come from just simply looking at it.
