subject: How To Pick Dining Area Furniture - Chairs [print this page]

For many people, the dining area table is the main piece of furniture in the kitchen, but choosing the right dining chairs is just as important. Dining chairs must be comfortable and practical, and should fit in with the style of your dining room. They must also fit in together with your dining table and any other furniture within the room.

Dining Room Furniture - Number and Size of Chairs

The very first things to consider when choosing dining chairs are the quantity of chairs that you will need and the size of chair that your particular kitchen can accommodate. The amount of dining chairs that you will want will depend upon the number of people that you are likely to be seating, but will also rely on the size of your kitchen and the other furniture which you have in that area (particularly the size of your dining table).

Be sure that you choose chairs which are wide enough for those to sit on comfortably, but that aren't so wide that there won't be enough room together for anyone to move. You also ensure that the chairs that you choose are the right height to use with your table, so people have enough room between their legs and also the table to be comfortable when they're seated. Ideally, there needs to be no less than 12 inches (30cm) between the top of the seat and the table.

It's also important to make sure that there's enough room between the back of the chair and any walls or furniture when people are sitting down.

Dining Area Furniture - Type of Chair

There are many types of dining chair on the market, so you should be able to find one that's perfect for your kitchen. However, there are a number of factors to consider when selecting a style of chair.

To begin with, you will have to consider the frequency of which you will use your chairs and whether you will keep them around the table when not in use. If you only use your dining chairs once or twice a year and you have a small room, you might like to stack them out of the way or move these to other rooms in the home for additional seating. If this really is the case, you may have to choose chairs that can be stacked or that will not look out of place elsewhere in your home. If you are planning to leave the chairs around the table when not being used, you only have to think about how they will look in your dining room and whether they will match the table and also other furniture.

Make sure that you choose a chair that is going to be comfortable and, in case you choose chairs with hard seats, consider buying cushions to go with them. Decide whether you are trying to go for an informal or more formal look in your room. Would you like modern, plastic or metal, curved chairs, for example, or more traditional, straight-backed, wooden chairs with arms? If you're thinking about purchasing a dining table too, many furniture retailers sell sets of matching tables and chairs, but you might want to buy them separately for a contrasting effect. Whichever style of chair you pick, make sure that it is well-made and that it's going to be easy to maintain.

Searching for dining room furniture online will allow you to compare the item specifications of different items before making your choice, and you could then have your new furniture delivered straight to your door.
