subject: The Importance Of A Key In Operating A Lock By An Austin Locksmith [print this page]

On a day to day basis you shall use a lock which involves needing a key to operate it. This daily usage makes it the most widely available lock that can be purchased and installed either from a hardware store or direct from your Austin locksmith. A lock involving a key can also have extras installed which increase security.

The main parts of this type of lock is the cylinder itself as well as the key. One shape of key goes with the one cylinder making it a unique combination. Extra keys can be made for the cylinder lock however these have to be identical in every part to the original.

This is because of the design of the original key which comes with an individual serrated edge as well as notches.

It is easier to explain the notches after a brief mention of the inside of the cylinder of the lock. Inside it are a number of pins which are of differing heights and these pins have to be manipulated into the correct predetermined height before the lock can be opened or indeed closed.

The notches on a key are designed to go with the pins within that lock. The notches push the pins to these predetermined heights so the wrong key means they are put into the wrong position and the lock remains closed. The pins are pushed into line allowing the cylinder to be turned and therefore opened.

At different times you may find the pins or the key jam meaning the key becomes stuck in the cylinder or the pins are unable to be turned by the key. When this happens it is easier to use the services of an Austin locksmith who can either pick the lock and free the pins or remove the key letting you use it again. If this is not possible then you may require a replacement lock with you being provided with a new unique key.
