subject: Unexpected Bugs That Bite [print this page] With our ever-increasing love of the great outdoors, many of us are turning our beloved gardens in a miniature wildlife landscape so that we can sit out there and enjoy nature all around us. Modern decks provide enough space for the family to eat outside and even hot tubs make this a wonderful area to relax in once the cares of the day have passed us by. However, what most people do not realize is that garden bugs which normally chomp down on greenery also bite human beings too!
Everyone must have heard of thrips which normally feast on anything green. Some species also chow down on fungal spores, but the odd thing about these creatures is that if the garden is overrun with them, they move indoors and feast on us too!
Experts do not know why these little creatures bite us, but once they land on exposed skin, bite they do. The resulting pain and itching is enough to put anyone off whatever they are doing and some restaurants which serve up food in the garden area have to get their places treated regularly.
The other annoying fact about these bugs is that screens and mosquito netting does not stop them either. Once they have overfilled the greenery outside, they find their way into buildings through the tiniest of holes and cracks and this is when the fun begins.
But perhaps the first step to take when people are being bitten is to get the pest identified. Online is a great place to do this since a lot of sites will have some kind of library for people to browse through. If it is decided that thrips are indeed the problem then there are several ways to get rid of them.
First is the garden where any plants or shrubs must be treated with insecticides. Care has to be taken here, particularly if there are pets present, and one should also take not of which way the wind is blowing before spraying commences.
The house itself may cause a more complicated problem since exterminators are usually not licensed to treat garden pests. It may take a garden company to come and advice and even identify if the householder is in any doubt. Garden companies can treat the house and since they know all about these pests, they often are able to sort out the garden quickly too.
If the problem is severe enough, it may well be wise to call in the experts anyway since they not only have all the expertise needed to know what is going on, they also have all the correct equipment, including protective gear, to finish the job in quick time. They are also knowledgeable when it comes to fish ponds and water features and will know if the insecticide being used will damage ornamental fish or wildlife too.
Although most of us like to think that we can take care of this kind of problem by visiting the local do-it-yourself store, in reality, we often make costly mistakes before giving up and calling in the experts!
