subject: 3 Tips on Public Speaking - Improve Your Speaking Competence Quickly [print this page]

Tips on public speaking can sometimes vary in just how useful they are. Sometimes they may be very good; sometimes all they say is to control your breathing - which is a great tip, but not necessarily the meat and potatoes of mastering public speaking. When it comes to it, there are really three good ways to give your speeches a breath of life, and they actually have nothing to do with nerves, but everything to do with how you deliver your speech - which is the real core of being a good public speaker.

Sometimes, you can get your audience's attention right away by asking them a question. Regardless of what your speech is about, a question can get them engaged and thinking hard about what you're really saying. Throughout the rest of your speech, they'll have your question in the back of their minds and be engaged the whole time rather than tuning you out halfway through your speech.

One tip that is especially useful for informative speeches is statistical data. By quoting statistics which many people might have no idea about, even if they are experts in whatever field you are discussing, you can hook them immediately and really get them thinking. Powerful statistics can motivate them as well. While statistics in a speech do require that you do a lot of research beforehand, they are a fantastic way to look like you really know what you're talking about in relation to your topic, which lends you credibility.

By finding a solid quote from someone who is an expert in your field, or even just a famous individual who is respected by a lot of people, you can lend yourself immediate credibility. Quotes from authority figures in your area show that you've done your research, that you're informed, and that you're worth listening to because you've really put a lot of thought into the matter. A quote is definitely a good way to hook your audience and lend yourself plenty of starting credibility.

While these are but a few very good tips on public speaking, they will all help you in your quest of mastering public speaking as long as you practice them. In the end, public speaking is about confidence, ability to speak your mind, and the knowledge of your subject matter - all things that are best learned through practice.
