subject: Advantages of a Large Cork Board [print this page] How is a large cork board advantageous to me? I have the knack for forgetting things, especially the small stuff. If it is anything smaller than a wallet, then it's as good as gone. That is how chronic my forgetfulness has become. Over the years, though I tried to develop self-checking methods, some slip ups still happen. Before we leave the house, my family has the mind to ask me if I have my glasses with me, my mobile phone in my bag, and of course, the house keys. These are the basic items that are often the victim of misplacement. My husband grew weary of this and I, too, get frantic when I feel that I forgot something so important. Even the anticipation of forgetting something upsets me.
To provide a simple aid to this problem, my husband suggested I place a large cork board where I can always see it. Since I'm always in the kitchen, I placed a big one in a bare wall just above the small table set in one corner. I do most of my calculations in that corner for monthly bills and other expenses of the family.
Good thing I still remember to do those. So, one large cork board I placed and went on to improvise a system that will work for me. I divided the surface into four columns using yarn. Then I labeled each column with headings as "urgent" for items that need to be taken care of immediately; must-haves for things that should be in my bag always; appointments like school activities, meeting with the doctor; and, the last column I leave for stuff that do not fall under the other categories.
So far, it is working for me. I even used different colored post-its so that at first glance, I know which column needs my attention the most. As they say, out of sight, out of mind. When I can see my tasks before me, I instantly program myself to stick to the schedule, making it easier for me to identify when I missed something.
Using a large cork board to manage my schedule instead of the usual organizer has helped me keep up with the time demands of running a household. I have learned how to manage my time between taking the kids to school, grocery shopping, and now, even my own home business.
Before that large cork board, I had to struggle to keep up with everything. Now, I juggle my time so smoothly that one would think I have someone else do stuff for me instead. I am more relaxed, my mind is trained to check for some missing routines and I have more time for myself. All thanks to my large cork board.
