subject: Broncos WR Kenny McKinley Found Dead [print this page]

The Denver Broncos were dealt a shocking blow a day after their win over the Jacksonville Jaguars when they learned of the death of receiver Kenny McKinley. McKinley, 23, was found in his home on Monday afternoon, with a single gunshot wound to the head. Initial reports say it was a suicide, with the gunshot wound appearing to be self-inflicted, but the authorities have yet to complete their autopsy.

McKinley was a second-year player for the Broncos. He was drafted in the fifth round in 2009 out of the University of South Carolina, where he set school records for catches (207) and receiving yards (2781). He played sparingly as a pro, appearing in onlyeight games as a rookie before being placed on Injured Reserve late in the 2009 season. He was also placed on IR prior to the start of the 2010 season.

Sadly, tragedies like this are not new to the Broncos organization. On New Year's Day 2007, cornerback Darrent Williams was gunned down in his limousine following a party and a heated confrontation. The assailant in the case was sentenced to life in prison. Just a few months later, running back Damien Nash suffered a heart attack during a charity basketball tournament and passed away. Both Nash and Williams were 24.

The Broncos will honor McKinley with a moment of silence before their game against Indianapolis this Sunday. Additionally, they will wear decals bearing his uniform number, 11, on their helmets for the rest of the season.
