subject: 3 Factors to Great Introductions [print this page]

Have you ever been the victim of a bad introduction? I mean, an introduction that simply does not do justice to your skill set, experience, or character, whatsoever. In business networking, a good introduction can be the make it or break it point between you and a referral.

While meaning well, our colleagues, clients, or friends, may not realize the importance of such an activity. They may fail to realize, you are being introduced to someone who doesn't know you from a can of worms. It is great, however, that you are being highly recommended and introduced in the first place.

Let's focus for a second on that "highly recommended" statement. When you are introduced, or introduce someone with the purpose of business to take place somewhere down the line, what are the factors that make it a good introduction? In other words, how high can the "high recommendation" be interpreted?

When a new person is introduced to you, the source of the introduction contributes well, due to your relationship with that source. However, everything related to this introduction can contribute to the expectations and credit you give this new person. Those related factors are;

1. Enthusiasm

Depending on who is being introduced and for what, enthusiasm is a key part in branding. That's right, although we try to brand ourselves a certain way when it comes to business networking and self marketing, the way we are introduced, adds its own brand. Remember this the next time you have to make a good introduction.

2. Background

Aside from enthusiasm, is the aspect of credibility. When a referral is given, it comes with a certain amount of credibility because of the referer. However, never neglect to physically mention the background of a good referral. Why? Solid facts given from a good referral source helps to add proof.

3. Adequate Reason

Not giving adequate reason is one of those things that happens when a person means well but hasn't put realistic probabilities together. This also happens in business networking groups when a person is accountable to deliver referrals.

When an introduction is made for the purpose of some positive business interaction as a result, a probable scenario should be considered. In other words, you should envision a realistic transition of events. This makes for a more productive introduction.
