2. Use business directories - As well as providing access to a long list of builders in your area, the better ones carry reviews from other users. You always read reviews about hotels before booking a holiday, so use the same judgement skills when choosing a builder.
3. Look for affiliation with a respected trade body - the better builders will be fully accredited and members of key trade organisations, so do your home work.
4. 'Google' them - Once you've done points 1 through 3, why not type the building firm's name into a search engine and see what comes up. You might find something important.
5. Get some quotes - Note the plural. Obtain estimates from two or three builders for the job you have in mind. Be weary of surprisingly low quotes and if there's a quote that's much higher than the other two, get a fourth quote just to give you a broader idea of what the job is likely to cost.
6. Have it in writing - once you've chosen the firm you are planning to use, make sure they have enough availability and get the details of the job, the quote and the deadline in writing.
