subject: Staying Safe At Home With Nashville Suburban Home Security [print this page]

Its generally thought that living downtown in a place is far more dangerous than living in the suburbs. Of course, this may generally be true for those walking around where they shouldnt be at night, but is it true of residential home security? It may surprise many people to know that when it comes to safety at home, the opposite is true. It is far more likely that a residential home in a suburban neighborhood will be the victim of a robbery than one in an inner city. There are several reasons why suburbs of any city whether New York or Nashville, and several ways to keep your home from being an easy target too!

Access. Suburban homes tend to have many access points, making them harder to protect and keep secure. In a city, the only access points to a home are generally the front door and a window or two several stories up. In the suburbs, a person might be able to figure out a way into the home through any one of a number of doors and windows, as well as the attic or basement. Stay safer at home by using door and window locks at all times, and always keeping entry points locked and secured even while you are there. Using safety screens or specialty window locks can help in the summer when windows are often left ajar.

Content. While the average person in a city might not have a whole lot of stuff in a small apartment, house or residence, in the suburbs each home has a lot more to offer. The items that most thieves are looking for are expensive jewelry, cash, small electronics, prescription medications, and even weapons like handguns. These kinds of goods are all found more often in suburban homes than those located downtown, and in far greater numbers. Protect your home security by avoiding advertising such items. Dispose of prescription medication containers, electronics cartons and containers and even jewelry boxes discretely instead of leaving them on the curb, and always keep windows or blinds drawn when you arent at home during the day to keep from catching the eye of a would-be thief.

Opportunity. While in a city its hard to say when any given person might be home, in the suburbs thieves know that most people are away at work or school for the entire day. This gives a great big window of time in which to rob the residence. Most suburban homes also use vehicles, meaning its easy to see when a person is around and when they are out. It surprises many homeowners to know that the vast majority of residential burglaries happen during the daylight hours, but logically it makes sense from a burglars perspective. If you are not protecting your home with a home alarm system and other security features during the day, then you are creating an opportunity for someone else to take advantage of. When a burglar happens by your neighborhood and has to choose between two homes, will yours be the easy target, or will you protect yourself and eliminate the opportunity for robbery in your Nashville home?
