subject: "The Event"... Made No Sense [print this page] The whole "flashback" thing is starting to get old, and although "The Event" was trying to show us various plots almost simultaneously in the truest "24" style, that technique is now not so much interesting and enthralling as it is cumbersome and confusing.
It was great when shows first started using it, but it's lost the uniqueness it once had.
All in all, however, "The Event" deserves top grades for mysteriousness. At the end of it, when the airplane is about to crash into the residence in which President Martinez(Blair Underwood)is about to give a press conference, the airplane disappears into a massive wormhole right out of the "X Files." The characters were probably as confused as the audience watching the premiere.
The show will ultimately focus on Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), the by-now typical anti-hero who gets caught up in things that go way over his head but, let's face it folks, he'll somehow pull together and save the day.
The show also features a prison camp in Alaska, which it is presumed that President Martinez will be disclosing to the public in the aforementioned press conference. That press conference is bitterly opposed by theMartinez's advisers and it is, presumably, cancelled (or at least delayed) by the airplane incident.
Walker ison the plane, and it's not entirely clear why but his disappeared girlfriend (perhaps being held hostage so that Walker will go and assist in crashing the plane to kill off the president) is certainy a major factor in it - remember, before this incident, he was an average guy.
There are otherstory-lines and, obviously, a lot more of this show needs to be fleshed out, including the characters who, despite some solid acting, appear to be pretty cookie-cutter prototypes.
The big mystery for next week is, of course, what was the event? We all saw the plane disappear, but was that the event? Or is the event something bigger?
Who are the prisoners in that Alaskan prison?
And, is this show about aliens or have the "24" terrorist types received an up-grade in technology?
It looks like, for now, the alien mystery genre might be making a come-back, but show's producers really should think about giving a few more details about what's really going on in the next episode.
Audiences are getting tired of shows that milk suspense.
"The Event" will be on on NBC, Mondays at 9 PM.
