subject: Wireless Internet Card Aircard...bad Idea [print this page]

I would like to bring to light some of the issues that may arise. As a satellite Internet provider I cringe when someone informs me they have elected to purchase an aircard.

First of all lets take a look at the technology. An Internet Air Card or Wireless internet card share cell phone towers.... Chances are if you do not receive good cell phone coverage you will not receive adequate internet coverage as well. As most of the people I talk to sign up for internet service in their home if you are not getting a stable internet connection in your home what good is it. A laptop is best equipped for the air card a desktop I cannot be so sure. There may or not be an install fee associated with the internet card depending on how technical you are.

Money...With between $50.00 and $150.00 to purchase a wireless Internet card it can be a pretty expensive fee to find out if your service will even be available. Some providers even do a credit check for the Internet aircard. This is a bit much for a service you arent aware will work or not

There is a two year contract with a flat fee of $300 for termination...this is a lot and you know cell phone companies will collect.

Aircard Internet Service is billed through a cell phone provider.... Think for a minute. What is your cell phone bill supposed to be and what are you actually paying. If you thought a cell phone had extra fees just wait. Wireless Internet Cards carries a usage allotment. The allotment is a measly 5000 megabytes. When you exceed this allotment you are charged....a lot ! Just think of the first time you were shocked for texting or data usage on your phone. Now imagine the money you will have to pay after a months worth of wireless internet card usage. There are safer alternatives to an aircard Internet provider.

Technicians will determine your satellite Internet signal and install if it is strong enough. This is the same process and same technology that applies to Satellite TV. Start up is minimal compared to what it costs years ago. Wildblue Satellite Internet is actually less to start up than competitive dealers. Statements are easy to read and available online with no confusing charges. If you do exceed Wildblue's much larger data threshold of 7.5 - 17 Gigs monthly you would have a reduction in download speed for the remainder of the 30-day window but you would accrue no additional costs (Unlike the Internet aircard). Standard installation for Wildblue in free. The commitment for Wildblue Satellite internet is only a $15.00 per month early termination fee.... 6 months= 90.00 dollars vs. an internet card that will charge their flat fee of 300.00 regardless of the number months left. With a 90-service warranty Wildblue takes the appropriate steps to make sure your service is working at a speed of 10-30's faster than dial-up.
