subject: What Should You Expect From Your Meditation Session? [print this page]

Especially if you are a beginner to meditation, there's a good chance that you'll be wondering what you should expect from your meditation session. This is a perfectly natural question which doesn't necessarily have an easy answer as quite often there are different reasons for embarking on a meditation session in the first place.

Which means that you should start each session by having a clear idea of where you want to end up. The precise destination doesn't matter but having an idea of where it is will be useful.

For instance, you may be using your meditation to help your body to heal itself. This is quite a common reason for embarking on a meditation session - the act of relaxing your body allows it to concentrate on the natural healing processes that we all possess.

Another common reason for holding a meditation session is to allow yourself to unwind and relax. Many jobs and situations involve stress and the act of meditating is an excellent way to help you to wind yourself back down after a stressful event or day.

Another thing to remember is that each meditation session is likely to be slightly different. You're approaching it from a slightly different state because we never go through our lives in precisely identical ways, otherwise we'd be having a permanent groundhog day. In turn, your meditation session will take a slightly different route. Maybe you'll be more aware of things around you, maybe you'll be less aware.

The main thing to remember is that these different states don't mean that particular meditation session was right or wrong - every single one is correct for the state that you're in at the time you meditate.
