Tennesseans got to see a break in Handler's celebrity skewering so prominent on her talk show "Chelsea Lately" as she focused more on self-deprecating jokes in her stand-up routine. Reflecting on personal experiences rather than on the celebrity faux pas her E! program gravitates toward, Handler proved she's much more than a one-dimensional comedian during her Sept. 24 Nashville gig.
Speaking with The Tennessean before her performance, Handler mentioned her stand-up routine, saying, "I like to air my dirty laundry, because if you're going to spend your career making fun of other people, it's good to start by making fun of yourself."
Of course, die-hard Chelsea Handler fans in Nashville already know some of her dirty little secrets. Handler's recent foray into written storytelling has earned her a place on the New York Times' Best-Sellers List for her series of tell-all books about her dysfunctional family, vodka swilling and habits in between the sheets (the latter subject filling the pages of her 2005 book "My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands,") and it's her latest book "Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang" that is the force behind her current slew of stand-up dates.
Handler is also responsible for the crack-up read "Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," a 2008 best-seller, but it's her quick-witted zings on live television that have made Chelsea Handler a bona fide celebrity in the entertainment industry.
Handler got her start as a stand-up comic in the mid-1990s, but made her big break in the Oxygen Network television series "Girls Behaving Badly" in 2002. The "Candid Camera" type show exhibited Handler's humorous demeanor and anything-goes personality, and she was soon thereafter tapped to host her own late-night talk show on the E! Network. The resulting program "Chelsea Lately" began in 2008 and has since broken barriers as she's become one of the leading ladies in the late-night TV niche dominated by men (think Jay Leno, David Letterman and Conan O'Brien).
The hilarious comedienne also chalked up a victory for the female sex recently when she hosted the annual MTV VMA Awards, becoming the first female host for the show since Roseanne Barr in 1994 and earning the highest ratings at the VMAs since 2002. Speaking to The Tennessean about the VMAs, Handler said, "It was just a really fun night. I got a little raked over the coals by the press, but if I listened to the press, I wouldn't have a career in the first place."
