subject: Cesar Millan Tickets - 'dog Whisperer' Cesar Millan Advocates Dog Adoption [print this page]

You know him as the "Dog Whisperer," but his real name is Cesar Millan, and he recently paired with True Blood actress Michelle Forbes to encourage pet adoption, reports Dog Magazine. The stars teamed up with Last Chance for Animals (LCA) on Puppy Mill Awareness Day (Sept. 18) for a community event created to raise awareness about the abusive conditions in commercial breed facilities (aka puppy mills).

Forbes and Millan were joined by Mad TV's Debra Wilson, Los Angeles Postmaster Mark Anderson, West Hollywood City Council Member Jeffrey Prang, L.A. Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette and L.A. Council Member Tom La Bonge, who also participated in the event. "It is important that the cruelty in puppy mills be brought to the attention of the masses and be stopped. It is or goal to discourage pet store and internet sales of puppies and kittens and to encourage adoption from rescue organizations and animal shelters instead," said Millan before adding, "Adopt, don't shop."

The event featured bands, children's activities, pet adoptions and animal-friendly vendors and was held at the Tar Pits in Los Angeles. LCA founder Chris DeRose said the location was "symbolic of our commitment to make the horrible practice of mass-producing dogs for the pet trade extinct" and added, "Puppy and kitten mills breed and sell millions of puppies and kittens for profit, while 4 million homeless dogs and cats are killed in U.S. shelters every year due to overpopulation."

Cesar Millan's stop at the LCA's Puppy Awareness Day event came in the midst of the Dog Whisperer's current speaking tour. Millan will be on the road through February 2011 and fans of his show and pet philosophy can get Cesar Millan - the Dog Whisperer tickets to see him in cities like Morristown, N.J.; Richmond, BC; Hamilton, ON; London, ON; Edmonton, AB; Englewood, N.J. and more.

Cesar Millan has been a household name-often called a Dr. Phil for dogs-since 2004, when National Geographic began airing The Dog Whisperer. For those who haven't seen the show, it features Millan paying house calls to clients in order to confront crises with their pets. Although most of the episodes take place in or near the homes of the dogs and their owners, Millan does sometimes decide that he needs to bring in the big guns: his Dog Psychology Center for Power of the Pack Training. Millan rehabilitates dogs that range from the aggressive and compulsive to the scared and lazy-and more often than not assesses the psychology of the pets' quirky owners as well!

Born in rural Culiacan, Mexico, Millan grew up watching classic television programs like Lassie and The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin and dreamed of moving to California to become a dog trainer. Millan moved to San Diego in 1990 when he was 21 and began working as a dog groomer, quickly gaining a reputation for being able to calm even the most difficult-to-tame dogs. Millan started a freelance dog rehabilitation on the side and eventually caught the attention of celebrity couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who referred him to other celebrities. After opening his first Dog Psychology Center, a profile 2002 on Millan in the Los Angeles Times landed him his own series on National Geographic and the rest is, as they say, history.
