subject: Improve Your La, Oakland Home Security Without Spending A Fortune [print this page]

If you live in Los Angeles, or Oakland, CA, and are worried about the increasing instances of residential crimes like break ins in your area, then improving the security of your home can help assuage your fears and calm you down. A lot of security systems and burglar alarms on the market these days are quite expensive depending on the the specific home security system you end up buying, the initial installation can cost up to several hundred dollars. And when you factor in the amount you will have to pay every month for monitoring services, things can really start to add up.

But making yourself, your family, and your belongings safer by improving your home security does not have to cost you a fortune. There are actually a lot of accessible, inexpensive ways to beef up security in your Los Angeles or Oakland area home. The following is a list of things that you might not automatically associate with safety but which can greatly improve your Los Angeles or Oakland security without spending a fortune.

1. Doing yard work. Cleaning up your yard can actually greatly improve your level of home security. This is especially true of trimming hedges, bushes, and other bulky shrubbery that you might have growing close to your doors or windows. This is because overgrown hedges, bushes, and shrubs can provide places for burglars to hide and plot their entry into your home. Elminating these hiding places will make you and your family safer.

2. Getting a dog. Like all electronic devices, a home alarm can run out of batteries or be tampered with. A dog will not only be a great friend and companion, but it will also never run out of batteries. Having a guard dog, especially a big one, can be very intimidating to burglars and can persuade them to skip over your home and choose another home to break into. If you do not have the time to take care of a dog, or if you simply do not want one, a great, cheap security alternative is to fake having a dog. You can do this by getting a few dog accessories to plant around your house and surrounding property, such as a big leash, food and water bowls, chew toys, or a dog house.

3. Faking a male roommate. It may sound sexist, but this one is especially good for women who are living alone in Los Angeles or Oakland. It is also along the same lines as faking a dog. Burglars are less likely to break into a home that has a man inside of it, especially a big man who can be less easily dominated physically. If you are a women living alone, you can easily improve your home security by investing in a pair of large mens shoes and a big coat to leave in sight near the front door to give the illusion that there is a man inside. This will make burglars think twice before breaking in.
