subject: Discourage Potential Burglars By Taking A Few Home Security Steps [print this page]

Unfortunately, crimes against property are the most common types of crime and are on the rise. There are many reasons for the increase, but to make sure your home is well protected against such crimes start employing a handful of steps now.

Burglaries are common crimes in cities and towns alike. No matter where you live, you are at risk to becoming a victim. If your home has any valuables inside, then you are a potential victim to a crime against property. Furthermore, while burglars may not be the smartest individuals on the planet, they generally know what they are doing and are well versed in the process. In other words, there is no real way to fool them into thinking your home is secured if it does not actually have an alarm in place. Starting with an alarm, a comprehensive security system should also include steps taken with the windows and doors, in your front yard, and in your backyard.

First, start the process off with a quality home security system. A home security system that meets all of your needs is a great way to start off the process because it provides the most basic building block towards your comprehensive security plan against potential burglars. An experienced burglar will first look to see if your home is equipped with a security system. Having one in place greatly reduces the chances that the burglar will target your home. He will more than likely turn his attention to a home that poses far less risk of being caught.

Second, secure the windows and doors. A home security system without secured windows and doors cannot work at its full potential. Secondly, be sure to secure the second floor windows and balcony doors, as an experienced burglar will find a way to gain access through an unsecured point of entry if give an opportunity.

Third, turn your attention to your front yard. The front yard needs to be well lit and have its overgrown trees and bushes trimmed back. The goal is to make your front yard visible to neighbors and passersby on the street. Eliminate the dark shadows that out of control trees and bushes create.

Fourth, the same attention you give to your front yard should now be turned to your backyard, where many valuables are generally stored or left with little thought to potential burglaries. You may forget about taking home security steps in your backyard, assuming that a locked fence or gate will keep a determined burglar out. A burglar will find a way into your backyard if that means easy access into your home or access to valuables left in the backyard. Lock away valuable items in backyard sheds, tied down and lock other items to the deck, and be sure to secure the backdoor.

The process of securing ones home should be multi-faceted, not focusing solely on ones security system. While that is the most important starting point, it should not be the first and last step taken. An experienced burglar will know how to spot an alarm, but will also be looking for points of entry and easy hiding places. Eliminate those and you have greatly reduced the likelihood that your home will become a burglars next target.
