Andrea Bocelli enjoyed another first in late 2009, as he released his very first holiday album, titled My Christmas. My Christmas arrived on Nov. 3, 2009 and saw Bocelli dueting with artists like Mary J. Blige ("What Child Is This"), Reba McEntire ("Blue Christmas") and even the Muppets ("Jingle Bells"). My Christmas also features Bocelli taking on classic holiday tunes like "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Silent Night" and "Adeste Fideles" with the likes of Katherine Jenkins, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Natalie Cole.
Born in the rural Tuscan village of Lajatico with congenital glaucoma, Andre Bocelli suffered from poor eyesight throughout his childhood and was rendered completely blind after enduring a soccer injury at the age of 12. Bocelli persevered and earned a law degree from the University of Pisa but began pursuing singing while working as a lawyer. Bocelli got his foot in the door when Italian rock star Zucchero Fornaciari asked him to record a demo of his song "Miserere," which was co-written by U2 frontman Bono, and he recorded the song as a duet with none other than Luciano Pavarotti.
Bocelli and Pavarotti became close friends and, after Bocelli toured with Fornaciari, he performed at the Pavarotti International Festival in 1994. That same year, Bocelli launched his solo career with his eponymous debut album. Bocelli followed in 1996 and then he released Viaggio Italiano, an album comprised of traditional songs from Naples and famous arias. Although only released in Italy, Viaggio Italiano managed to sell a whopping 300,000 copies. Bocelli really solidified his status as a star, however, with his fourth album, Romanza. The pop-laced album went multi-platinum and included the hit duet with Sarah Brightman, "Time to Say Goodbye."
Bocelli dueted with another international star, Celine Dion, on his next album, 1999's Sogno, and earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and won a Golden Globe for the album. Since then, Bocelli has continued to release internationally lauded albums like his 20th (yes, 20th) album, Incanto. The collection of romantic cover songs arrived in 2008 and was followed by Carmen - Duets and Arias, his most recent studio album, in 2010.
