The Blackberry torch is an exciting new phone from Blackberry, one that many long term fans of Blackberry have touted the best Blackberry yet, and one that may well introduce a whole new range of people into the world of Blackberry, a world that's been at risk since the introduction of the Apple iPhone and Android operating system.

The Blackberry Torch 3g Orange edition (for UK consumers) is sure to become a flagship phone for the company and could signal at turning point for the fortune of the brand. Read on to find out why.

Design

The Torch's design is the first thing you'll notice as being a little different from the usual Blackberry formula, but only at first glance. It's actually quite familiar once you get passed the sliding keyboard ,a feature which is going to polarise many fans of Blackberry. It's just as easy to type on as every other QWERTY keyboard, but it does make the phone much easier to carry around in your pocket. Outside of that though, the design mirrors the Blackberry storm pretty closely. The screen on the Torch is bright, powerful and easy to read. It's not quite as big as the larger screens that have been available for some Android phones, however.

Function

The use of Blackberry OS 6 on the Torch means that there's plenty of functionality that will be familiar Blackberry users, and there's nothing too overwhelming that new users might be turned off by some of the ideas or interface. There are plenty of customisation options for the main menu and you can easily mess around and change everything to your liking. In terms of skins and themes there's plenty available to download, so you shouldnt get bored of the interface any time soon.

Interacting with the phone is a pleasure, but still not quite as good as it could be. Some of the interface still needs some work to bring it up to perfect standards, but in general there are only a few areas where improvements could be made. There's an optical tracker for times when you don't feel like using the touch screen, too.

Web browsing on the Blackberry Torch is an easy task and the size of the screen means it's easy to view most optimised webpages. Likewise, the torch has impressive signal retention and a strong battery life which boats around 5.5 hours of talk time and much, much more on standby. The size of the screen may work to the Torch's advantage, here. The camera takes great pictures and is probably the most impressive ever seen on a Blackberry phone, but unfortunately can't currently take HD video.

Summary

The Torch is a great re-entry into the market for Blackberry, and should convince many Blackberry users that the company still has plenty of life left despite the popularity of its competitors. It's a powerful phone with some impressive features and it still feels 'blackberry' without feeling old and stale. An interface that's not totally designed for touch and the lack of HD video recording are the only things that let the Torch down.
