subject: Cheap Living For The Rv Enthusiast [print this page]

Summer's almost over and for some RV enthusiasts, that means heading south for the winter. Many enjoy traveling across the southern US, or living at an RV campground for the winter. For anyone spending extended periods of their time in an RV, here are a few tips for living economically.

*First tip is to look for camping places that will give a discount on any type of long-term stay. This can save quite a bit of money. Do a little research before you head out on the road and ask around for the most affordable accommodations.

*Home cooking will save you money. How often have you eaten at a restaurant, not really enjoyed the meal, but spent $20 or $30 on the dinner. By heading to the grocery store instead of a restaurant, you'll get what you like how you like it and it will be cheaper than eating out. Mix it up a little by cooking your own version of local dishes.

*When buying a new or used RV, don't waste money on an RV that is bigger than what you comfortably can use. It will end up being a lot more expensive and may not necessarily be what you want or need. Spend some time weighing the pros and cons of new and used vehicles and different size vehicles.

*Many people like to buy souvenirs as reminders of the places they have been. Even a few dollars here and there adds up. Instead, take pictures of your favorite moments. Dedicate a wall at home to RV vacation photos. They will be a lot more memorable than a trinket that will most likely end up covered in dust or given away a few years later.

*Spend a little time with friends and family. If they live far away and you don't get a chance to visit with them often, take the time now. You might form close bonds with people you haven't had a chance to know in a long time. Plus, depending on where they live you may not have to pay for campground lodging.

*Trade. Trade is a great way to get something for less. Jewelry, blankets, Frisbees, anything can be traded with the right people. Not everyone is going to go for it, but you never know what kinds of stories and people you will meet through trading.

*Before you leave, organize a budget. Decide what you can spend on a monthly, weekly, even daily basis. It's easy when traveling to put this or that on a credit card and then realize you far over budget you are after the trip is over. If you need to, take cash and ration it. When it's gone, it's gone.

The RV lifestyle is a great way to see new places more affordably than with traditional travel. By using the above tips, you'll end up home without needing to pick-up a second job to pay for the fun.
