subject: 5 Leadership Mistakes You Need to Avoid [print this page]

A great leader is not one who doesn't make mistakes. A great leader is one who learns from them. That's because great leaders take chances and risks and some of those will inevitably fail. That said, there are some mistakes that should be avoided at all costs. Here is a list of such often ignored mistakes aspiring leaders really need to make sure they don't make.

1. Putting People Second: Remember, the people are what make your organization tick. If you have the loyalty and dedication of your employees, you have gone a long way to being a successful leader. Many managers make the mistake of putting the task at hand over and above their team, with disastrous results.

2. Not Building Bonds: Some leaders prefer to not develop personal relations with their team members. Maybe because they are not naturally comfortable doing that. Or they are afraid of being taken advantage of. Great leaders however, always manage to strike a balance between the personal and the professional.

3. Ignoring Team Problems: All team members will not get along well with each other. That's just a fact of life. However, ignoring tiffs and strained relations between team members - hoping they will "work it out" or the problem will "go away with time" simply leads to a disintegrating team dynamic.

4. Dumping Instead Of Delegating: Leaders must delegate work. In fact it's something the best leaders are very good at. But there is a difference between delegating work and dumping it on the shoulders of a team member lower down the ladder. A successful leader delegates the work, but provides guidance and advice whenever necessary and also takes responsibility in case of problems.

5. Getting Lost In The Details: Leaders dream big. Get too lost in the details and you are bound to lost sight of the vision, the dream you are all striving for. Let the team member worry about the details, the job of the leader is to make sure the ship stays its course and reaches its final destination.

Being a leader is not an easy task, because if it was everyone would be doing it. It needs acumen, dedication and the right training.
