subject: 5 Things To Look Out For To Avoid Becoming A Car Crash Statistic [print this page]

Nobody likes the numbers in fatal car crash statistics. Many car accidents are caused by distracted driving. Despite whatever the government may do to crack down on bad drivers, the only way to stop car crash fatalities is to drive safer.

As an injury attorney, I see the aftermath of dangerous driving. Here are five things that you need to be careful of to avoid becoming a fatal car accident statistic.

1. Don't use your phone! It doesn't matter if your texting, talking, e-mailing, or reading blogsit prevents you from paying attention to driving. Cell phone use is one of the biggest causes of distracted driving.

2. Rubbernecking. While often times you may witness things outside your car that may take your attention away from driving, you shouldn't pay attention to billboards, signs, or accidents.

3. Eating. Eating in the car will also cause distracted driving. Even if your meal is car friendly, you are better off pulling over or eating before you get into the car.

4. Looking for things you lost in your car. Everybody is doing it, but that doesn't make it safe. This is another big reason people get distracted while driving. Where did my cell phone go? Or my printout from Google Maps? Digging around in your car for lost items takes your mind off the road and leads to distracted driving. Pull over if you can't find it. Anyway, you're most likely going to find that thing sooner than later if all you're doing is looking for it.

5. Man's best friend may also be our biggest distraction. Don't get me wrong--I love my dog. But I also know that she can be very distracting when I drivethat's why I make sure to put her crate in the back so she can't run around when I drive. And now my dog is less likely to be hurt also! Car seats aren't made for dogsand your dog can get hurt if it isn't secure.

Car crash statistics point to distracted driving as one of the main causes of car crashes. The problem is we never know if other drivers are distracted or not. You don't have to go it alone if you are hurt in a car accident. Speaking with a car accident attorney may help you determine how to get help to pay medical bills or how to win your fight with the insurance company. Don't take any chances and be safe out there!
