What is it, what causes it? Acne can be a very distressing complaint, normally through the teenage years. This a time in your life when you can really struggle to cope with acne due to all the changes that are going on in and around your body, hormones going crazy pulling your emotions all over the place. Acne normally fades away by the early twenties but in severe cases may go through to the thirties and even beyond. Acne (acne valgaris) is caused by a change in structure at the hair follicle and its gland that secretes a fatty substance that comes to the skin surface along the growing hair shaft. The change causes the hair follicle to become blocked, the gland swells and be comes infected. Acne normally occurs on the face and neck but may also be present on the back, chest and shoulders. There are many causes of acne. Although why some people have this complaint and other do not is not fully understood. However the main factors that are linked to acne are certainly hereditary, acne tend to run in families with a past history, increased hormonal activity during puberty can cause the gland in the follicle to swell and in-turn block the said follicle. Bacteria in the skin pores and an accumulation of dead skin cells can cause these lesions to flare up. Increased stress levels through the teenage years, (our society expects more and more performance from our teenagers) increases the production of hormones from the adrenal glands, these too are associated with acne. Diet can be a contributing factor too. It has been found in recent studies that milk and some dairy products can contribute to the development of acne due to the hormones present. Common Sense and Treatments that Work There are many treatments available for acne, some very expensive and many, not even scientifically proven. What it all boils down to really is a bit of common sense. Experiment with your diet especially if you have a lot of dairy products, try to reduce these, I know this may be hard, as a teenager I suffered from acne and I loved my cheeses. Try not to scratch the lesions, this will certainly inflame them more and do cleanse your skin regularly to neutralize any bacteria that may be present. Natural cures that do work are also available.
