subject: Keeping Notes For Genealogy Research [print this page]

As you go about your genealogy research, its vital that you keep good records of the information you've found. You might think that's what the computer is for - and to extent it is. But remember that sometimes you may have to look up information in record offices or other places where you don't have access to the PC. Even if you have a laptop, it may not he possible to take it everywhere with you.

So. Its a good Idea to use a standard form when you're gathering information, if you aren't typing it straight into the computer. That way you can be sure there won't be same crucial bit of information you've forgotten to ask about or note down. You can design your own forms if you like, but there are also plenty of ready-made ones available on the internet. For example, the BBC Family History site has a range of forms that you can download by following the www.bbc.co.uk

The US company Kindred Keepsakes also offers free forms, including some that will be useful if you have to research American relatives. These can be found at the website www.kindredkeepsakes.com
