subject: Picking The Perfect Pool Cue And Knowing How To Clean It [print this page]

If you are interested in playing pool, you need to make sure that you have the perfect cue to help your game. A recreational or infrequent player may not notice that the piece they grab off the rack is two ounces heavier than the one they used the previous time.

You may not even check to see if it is straight by rolling it on the table for accuracy. So what's the big deal right?

Checking for both could make the difference in you winning or losing the game just because you didn't realize how important those little factors are when you're playing pool.

It's very difficult to check the weight on stick when your play in a Billiards Room, but when you have your own one you know the exact weight of that stick.

The correct weight, length, and feel make the difference. It might not cross your mind that the tip needs to be re-shaped or that the shaft isn't absolutely straight.

But for the more advanced professional player whose games rests on accuracy and consistency, these issues grow to be imperative. The only way to really make sure you are playing the best game ever consistently is by making the plunge and paying the bucks to have your own personal stick that fits all of your gaming needs.

Having your own cue has its advantages more than you realize. It's yours and yours alone.

No one else uses it, just you. Having your own one will afford you a consistency of performance that only comes with using the same equipment over and over again.

Like many other games of skill, the less a player has to think about while performing, the more likely they are to play at their maximum potential. So when choosing a cue, make sure it feels good in your hand.

It moves smoothly when you're lining up for a shot. It just really feels perfect to you and you will feel more confident when you're playing.

It could take a while to find that perfect cue. You just may want to have a custom one made for the type of game you play.

With your custom stick, the weight, balance, the feel of the grip, and the strike will be the same every time you hit the ball. With so many design choices, yours can add a touch of class to each and every game you play.

There are so many pieces out there how do you know which one is right for your experience and game you're wanting to play. All you can do is research.

It may take going into several halls or stores and just picking them up in your hand to see exactly how they feel. Ask friends you play with what type of cue they have and prefer.

You may go through several pieces in your pool carrier because your game could change, or your physical ability is limited for some reason. So understand the first one won't be your last.

It's just a beginning of your playing career. Your game will improve with the correct cue for your body and game.

So don't rush into purchasing just any old cue. Find the one that feels good in your hands.

Pool cues often become sticky because of a build up of chalk and oil from our hands. If they are not cleaned regularly, they can become permanently damaged or warped.

There are several different ways to clean your stick. Find out which you prefer and make sure you clean your cue at least once every few weeks, more often if you play every day.

You will need some cleaning detergent (dish soap or orange oil diluted 5:1 with water), 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper, and a piece of Simonis or cotton cloth. Apply your chosen cleaning solution to a cloth.

Dampen the cloth-getting too much liquid on the cue may cause warping. Clean the cue from the bottom to the ferrule.

Then lightly sand the cue with 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper. This will remove any excess chalk that may be left on the surface.

Wipe down the stick again with the damp cloth and dry immediately. Now you are ready with the perfect equipment, for the perfect game!
