Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder than is very serious and sometimes potentially deadly. Bulimia nervosa is more common in college age girls than any other age of girls and less common in boys and men. If you think you know someone with Bulimia, here are some of the symptoms to look for. Exercising right after eating or numerous times of the day, being occupied with their shape and weight, over-eating to the point that they are in pain and then going to the bathroom after eating or even during their meal. Watch for signs of depression, anxiety, sores or calluses on their hands, and damaged teeth and gums. If you know think someone has Bulimia and they have these symptoms, they will need to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
Someone with Bulimia will be in denial and will not want to seek medical help. If this is a friend or loved one, find someone they can confide in and trust to confront them. If you confront them, state your concerns to your loved one. They may not seek care right away but you will be able to offer support and encouragement until they are ready.
When an individual is ready to seek treatment, they will want to find an experienced medical treatment center. Their physician may be able to refer one. Antidepressants, psychotherapy, nutrition education and sometimes hospitalization will be needed for treatment. Bulimia is a difficult disorder to just stop so the patient will to change their lifestyle and surround themselves with emotional support.
