subject: Modeling Preparation [print this page] Modeling Done Right Modeling Done Right
Looking at you, I can tell you've always wanted to act. Or model. Anyway you've got a good face, and there's work to be had if you're ready to put in the time and effort. First off you're going to need to find yourself a good talent agency to help you navigate the rocky river of headshots and auditions.
There are more than a few bad agencies out there. But there are many many good ones too. So your first job is just to sort the good from the bad. And that means doing research. Learning what to look for. Not laying out your trust to the first agency that gives you a smile and a promise. That way leads to trouble.
Researching Your Agency
If an agency start sniffing around for money right away, asking for registration fees up front, it's time for you to find the door. They don't have your best interests in mind. Now a good agency will be fully licensed, they're going to take their time getting to know you, and they'll have a recognizable client list.
Now you get to ask yourself what kind of work you'll want to do. The talent agency will help you figure out what you're best for, whether print, radio, runway, television, or film. There are options on top of options, and casting directors are busy people. So it helps to know what you want so you can figure out how to get it. But keep in mind that all this can change as you get into the business. Maybe you've got the hands for modeling after all. Or a better voice than you thought. The thrill is in discovering your strengths.
Do You Have the Right Stuff?
The right face isn't always the most exotic face. In fact, more often than not, talent agencies are looking for people with the kind of real, everyday look that people will recognize, that seem familiar. It's all about having the right face, not the most uncommon one. And this face can be on a baby or a grandparent, and can be successful regardless of previous experience.
You can sure get overwhelmed with all this stuff, trying to keep it all in your head. The important thing is to do your homework and find the right agency early on. Then they can walk you through the rest -- the model composites, the auditions, the casting directors. It's a partnership, and you and your agency need to trust one another. At some point, though, the lights go on and suddenly, it's all about you.
