It is nearly impossible for web designers and the clients that they serve to satisfy both the end-user and search engine crawler, which determine page rankings. What isn't impossible is the fact that they can work around the issues. Unfortunately, many users tend to return to web sites due to continued problems. So, their needs and wants should always come first.

A great solution to dissimilar preferences between crawlers and users is called a site map. According to Wikipedia.org, a site map is defined as a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can either be a document or a web page. All of the pages are organized in hierarchical fashion. A site map helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site.

There are two types of site maps which are commonly used: basic site map and XML site map.

A basic site map consists of nothing more than text and links to all of the pages in a web site. Search engine crawlers prefer this type of site map. A basic site map gives you the opportunity to include anchors and keywords.

The second type of site map, XML site map, is a file that lists all of the URLs for a website. This file is hidden from a site's viewers, and only visible to web site crawlers that index the site.

Webmasters should thoroughly craft a site map in order to deliver great ranking results. Search engine crawlers take in much consideration when evaluating a site's map. Make sure that your SEO plan is well planned out before launching a web site.
