subject: A Vacation In Venice [print this page] If visiting Venice is part of your Italian adventure trip or you are only thinking about planning a visit to this city, you should consider the fact that Venice can be a source of romantic delight for you and your travel partners. The famous city with the water streets will give you a perfect taste of enchantment and allure.
This perfect little city is surrounded by hundreds of tiny canals and the city is first known to have been inhabited in the fifth century.
Mainland people came to this location in order to run away from the invasions that came about with the fall of the Roman Empire. Since they were barely able to survive on their own, there was no possible way to build a proper city. So this town became what it is because there was no way the inhabitants could turn it into a real town!
Today Venice offers some of the most picturesque locations like the San Marco Square the Doge's Place, the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, the lovely Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs.
If you are in Rome you should take the train to Venice and once you are there, you will be able to travel comfortably by either walking, gondolas or the famous vaporetto which is Venice's idea of a bus that sails on water. There is also the Marco Polo airport from where you can take boat or bus. Although full of grand museums and other tourist sites, the real Venetian culture can be encountered during wanderings in small canals and back streets. Full of shops, churches and vigorous squares, Venice is full of life and interesting tourist locations.
Due to the tropical location Venice has a very moderate temperature all year round with rains and fog. It is usually more crowded during summers and winters so fall and spring can be better to travel around in.
For travelling, the vaporetta is the main public transport. If you need to cruise the main canal you can the number one vaporetta which goes along the Grand Canal and makes a lot of stops. The water taxis and gondolas are more expensive but if you want to give yourself a treat they can be helpful.
You can traverse the six neighborhoods or if you can manage your trip to get you there in time of the Carnevale celebration then you will be able to see all the festivities and colorful liveliness of Venetians. There is also the Redentore Regatta in July which takes place on the Grand Canal.
