subject: Loving Ourselves With Confidence [print this page]

While none of us can change our height, we can change a few things about ourselves and learn to love the rest. I have had an interesting phenomenon take place this past year. I have always been an exercise enthusiast. I have run three marathons, participated in a multitude of races, my favorite being a 175 relay race over several mountain ranges. I run, bike, hike and swim because I love being outdoors and I love to be healthy. We only get one shot at this life and I want to live it to its fullest. My emphasis isn't necessarily on weight loss although weight maintenance is a great side effect of an active life. I am not tiny, I am just average height and average weight. Along with the rest of the country, I would love to be 20 pounds lighter. Over the last year I have become somewhat of a pottery addict. I have a studio and love nothing more than to make bowls, vases, mugs and pitchers. The more heavily I get into the creative world, the more the physical world I used to live in becomes dim. I still exercise everyday, I still bike, hike, run and swim but not with the intensity that I once did. I put in my hour and long to get back to my studio.

The point of all this being, the more interest we have in life, the more hobbies, passions, loves, interest, the less the physical is important. Now we all dye our hair, get perms, straighteners, tummy tucks, breast augmentation in NYC or anywhere and this can help us feel great, but if there isn't more to us than large breast or a flat stomach I don't think we will find the joy we are searching for. There is nothing wrong or harmful in altering that which we can, but it won't bring you joy and peace if you haven't found it first. Be your best self, you most creative, your most passionate, your most beautiful, dream of flat stomachs and beautiful curls. But first learn to love yourself and love life.
