subject: How To Become A Successful Football Coach [print this page]

American Football coaching job is a very challenging and demanding profession to get into. Football coaches not only need to understand the game on the field but also philosophies, strategies and behavioral guidelines for football players and staff to fully understand the game. According to Singletary's "The football coach has no direct control over what actually happens on the field rather, he has influence". The role of a coach in a game is crucial; he must know how to influence not only the plays that are called on the field, but the minds and hearts of the players executing those plays to make his plans to work.

Here are steps needed to break into American football coaching and some are suggested by successful coaches from NFL:

You need to live the game. If you love to play football, read about coaching and watch the game as often as you can and get cowboys tickets, you will learn to coach from your exposure to the game. To become a successful football coach, you must be willing to spend most of your time thinking about your players, your plays and your opponents and visualize your plan.

You must have connections from the right people. Many college coaches decided to become coaches while playing ball in school or started out as a volunteer coach. Other college coaches were once NFL players that they were easily tapped by schools to be their coach. Regardless of where they came from, coaches got jobs in the beginning of their careers mostly because of the connections they had.

Continue your education by getting a Bachelor's degree in physical education or coaching, exercise and sports science, physiology, nutrition and fitness, physical education or sports medicine will help you develop a career in coaching at any level.

Junior high's and high schools are always hiring part - time coaches for their football teams, so go to all the local schools in your area and try to apply. After you have gained a fair amount of experience in coaching, apply for one of the jobs that might need a full time coach.

Use your experiences to build your career. It usually takes years of coaching experience and a winning record in the lower ranks to reach the ranks of professional coaching and finally a successful career. These are your most important qualifications just like some of the great coaches at NFL that you often watch after getting cowboys ticket.
