subject: Install Kitchen Cabinets - The First Step Is Finding The High Point Of The Floor [print this page]

Start by drawing out the new design on your walls after you have gone over your plans and have familiarized yourself with the new layout. Take your time and make sure that you get this step done in an exact manner. This is like the base step that all of the other steps are built on.

So, it makes this step critical in the success of your new kitchen cabinet installation. The high point of the floor is the reference point that you will use for the entire installation process.

So, the very first thing that you will want to do is to measure up from the floor thirty inches and place a mark on the wall. Now, place a mark at this spot and using a four foot level, draw a level line along the walls where the cabinets are going to be placed.

Measure up from the floor every two feet or so around the kitchen and jot down the measurements at each spot. Jot down each measurement on the wall, and once you have determined which measurement is the smallest, you have found the high point of the floor.

So, the next thing that you need to do is to measure up from the floor at this high point and place a mark at thirty four and a half inches. Draw a new level line from this mark and you will have the top of the base cabinets established. The top of the base cabinets is now established and will represent the reference point for the rest of the kitchen installation.

Please take your time with this step as it is the most important step in your kitchen install. It is much like the base or foundation of any building structure. It has to be perfectly level. What you might want to consider is to rent a laser level from your local rental shop. This will give you the most precise level line, and you will be able to move ahead with confidence knowing that the base of your new kitchen installation will be perfect.
